Top 5 Ways To Connect To Your Audience

Whether you’re a music entertainer, public speaker, or business leader, there are some time-tested ways to hook your audience and invite them to interact with you. In this article, I will list the top-five effective ways to connect with your audience.

  1. Use dynamics in your voice. No one likes to hear speech so monotone that it puts them to sleep, or a song performed so unemotionally that it leaves the audience feeling nothing. Utilize speed and volume to emphasize emotion and the importance of your topics. Break up what the ear is hearing by speaking quickly and then slowing down for effect. The same can be said for volume. Think about your speech, song, or presentation, and consider what words or passages you would like to highlight, bring to the forefront, or make more intense with your vocal dynamics.

  2. Use direct action statements instead of vague questions. Artists and public speakers, instead of asking your audience, “How are you feeling tonight?”, a better option would be, “Put your hands together if you’re feeling good tonight!” Give the audience direct statements paired with an action. Action items can include having the audience clap, make some noise, raise their hands, repeat a statement you teach them, and take their phones out to take down important information or to put their flashlights on.

  3. Demonstrate what you want your audience to do. Never assume that an audience will just know what you want them to do, whether that’s sing a hook, raise their hands, or take out their phones. Always perform the required action first. Singers and rappers, make sure to acquaint your audience with the call and response that you want from them. Public speakers, please make sure to demonstrate any gestures or statements that you would like your audience to imitate. Think of yourself as a teacher at kindergarten story time.

  4. Do your research. How are you going to connect to an audience in a town or city far from home? Some strategies include saying if it’s your first visit or not. If it is, you can mention how you’re excited about exploring the area. If this is a repeat visit, you can mention your favorite local attractions. Also by searching for the local headlines of the next city you’ll be in, you can learn more about the local news and relate in that regard. Mentioning cultural references or sports teams also works in relating to your audience.

  5. Talking to your audience after the event. One of the most effective ways for audience members to remember you long-term is to stay after the concert or presentation and introduce yourself to as many people as possible. During your outro, tell your audience where you will be after the event, (main entrance, merchandise table, box office, etc.) and invite them to meet you. Many event and concert goers are intimidated by onstage talent and skill, so in essence give them permission to come talk to you. Thank me later.
